An Update From Our Interim Moderator

Hi everyone,

Season’s greetings! My name’s Paul McKeown and I’m the minister of Belhelvie Church of Scotland and Interim Moderator at Methlick Church of Scotland during their time of vacancy. I’ve been asked to write a wee update on how things stand with the local congregations in this spell of restructuring in the Church of Scotland and I’m happy to oblige.

The big news since the last issue is that Gordon Presbytery has approved the Gordon Presbytery Plan and this has also been approved by the central structures of the Church of Scotland. That means that going forward, Barthol Chapel and Tarves, Udny and Pitmedden and Methlick will now be expected to work towards a structural union, served by a ministry team of one full-time minister, one half-time appointee (possibly a part-time minister) and our fabulous local youthworker with the Formartine Youth Project, Caroline Brown.

One really important thing to get across at this stage is that though there will be changes in governance as the combined area becomes one parish, your local expressions of church will still remain as bases for worship, rites of passage, outreach and pastoral care. The church buildings at Methlick, Pitmedden and Tarves are all being retained and though sadly Barthol Chapel are losing their sanctuary they are thinking hard about how they can keep a worshipping presence going within their community.

Representatives from the four congregations have been meeting together for some time now and the next phase of that work will be pulling together the documents that will describe how the united parish will function. Once that’s been agreed by the kirk sessions and congregations, progress can be made on calling a minister and appointing the part-time worker for the parish. The complexity of this process means it’s going to take some time and given the importance of getting the foundations right, it’s probably going to be into the second half of 2023 before we are in a place to call a minister to the united charge. If you’re the praying kind, please keep all of us involved in this process in your prayers – we need and appreciate them.

In the meantime, though, life goes on in your local congregations and there’s plenty going on in the build up to Advent and Christmas:

Rev Alison Swindells will be running a 5-week Advent/Christmas Study “Finding Time for Christmas” (resourced by Sanctuary First) with personal devotions and a weekly group discussion on a Saturday morning 9.30am at Tarves Manse for an hour, running from Saturday 3rd December to Saturday 31 December. Formartine Churches Together

How can Tarves and Barthol Chapel, Udny & Pitmedden and Methlick work together?

The sessions of Tarves and Barthol Chapel (TBC), Udny & Pitmedden (UPC) and Methlick met at Haddo Main Hall on the 19 September 2021 to begin the process of discussing how this might/should look like in practice. There were 30 people in attendance: 25 representatives from the four churches, including the ministers of Methlick (Rev. Dr. Will Stalder) and TBC (Rev. Dr. Alison Swindells), the Interim Moderators of UPC (Rev. Sheila Mitchell and Rev. Anthony Craig) and the Probationer from TBC (Fiona Lister). It was a good and productive meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Church of Scotland is restructuring due to a nationwide shortage of full-time ministers and a surplus of buildings.

What does this mean for the churches in this area – Methlick, Tarves Barthol Chapel and Udny & Pitmedden?

We are currently working this out but it is likely that instead of three separate parishes, we will move to become one single parish e.g. Formartine Churches.

Does a single parish mean one church congregation meeting in one location?

No. There will still be Sunday services in each of the areas. But one parish simplifies things like administration, charity numbers, bank accounts and avoids duplication of effort.

So is the church building in Methlick closing?

No.

Who will be my Minister?

Rev Dr Will Stalder and Rev Dr Alison Swindells will be the two full time ministers for the single parish and will lead/coordinate the services across each of the locations. Occasionally, other members of the church will help in leading worship, preaching etc. as they do now.

What about Elders?

There will be one Kirk Session made up of elders from each of the congregations.

When will these changes take place?

The Church of Scotland has given us a period of time to discuss how we can work together in the future so a working group of individuals from across the four congregations is currently meeting monthly to make these decisions. We have until December 2022 to sign what’s called a “Covenant Agreement” which will formalise the changes.

How Can I Have My Say?

We want to hear what you think about the proposed changes so please contact either Will (wstalder@churchofscotland.org.uk) or Alison (aswindells@churchofscotland.org.uk) if you have any further questions or if there is anything you wish to discuss.
