Join us at Methlick Parish Church
The church is not a building or a place though these have their uses. The church is the people of God gathered together. It is a living thing – not a pile of bricks and mortar but a fellowship striving to work together in partnership with God.
There is no such thing as a stand-alone Christian. Every Christian woman, man or child is part of something bigger than themselves. One of the ways that the Bible conveys this truth is through the image of a body. Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth:
"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part in it."
The members of the Church embody the church, just as your hands, feet and head embody you. Without these different members, coming with all kinds of backgrounds, talents and gifts there would be no church.
Joining the church is not how you become a Christian. Rather joining the church is a way in which you proclaim your trust in Jesus and recognise your new identity in Him and as part of His Church.
The usual pattern within the Church of Scotland is that as an infant child you are received into the Church through baptism. This involves a commitment by your parents to bring you up in the Christian faith, and by the congregation to support the family in this task.
In due course it is hoped that you will come to make your own public profession of faith and become a member of the Church. This is sometimes referred to as confirmation.
Church membership is open to all those who have been baptised (or would like to be) and are now prepared to publicly profess their faith in Jesus.
In joining the church, you are asked to respond to four simple questions with the words: ‘I do’. The first question concerns your belief in God, your confession of Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, and your commitment to meeting with other Christians to worship on a Sunday. The other three questions establish your commitment to bible reading and prayer, living and speaking for Jesus, and serving and supporting the work of the church in the world.
For some, taking these vows would be to make a public commitment to what you are already doing (or trying to do!) as part of our church family. For others, it might involve a step towards a deeper commitment in terms of your personal devotional life, your service or giving in the life of the church.
You can join the Church of Scotland at any stage in your life; whether you were baptised as a baby and now wish to be confirmed into the Church or you are an adult seeking both baptism and confirmation.
You may also join the Church from other denominations and religions.
We would love to welcome you as part of the family of Methlick Parish Church.
If you want to think about church membership or baptism then please speak to one of our ministry team, who will be only too happy to help.
But remember…. You do not have to be a member to come along to any of our activities or services.
